In June, a sophisticated cyberattack compromised one of Google’s internal Salesforce systems that stored business contact details and contextual notes—primarily related to small and medium-sized businesses. The incident was orchestrated by a threat group known for social engineering. Attackers impersonated IT staff and tricked employees into authorizing a malicious app, granting them access to the system.
Although the stolen data largely consisted of public-facing information—business names, phone numbers, and related notes—roughly 2.5 million records were reportedly exfiltrated. Google responded swiftly by cutting access, analyzing the damage, and notifying affected parties by early August. Crucially, no customer payment data or core advertising product information was compromised.
This breach highlights the effectiveness of human-centric attack strategies, even against major tech companies. It serves as a stark reminder that strong technical defenses are only one part of the security equation—staff vigilance, robust authentication, and careful access controls remain essential.
