FortiGate Firewalls Being Used as Entry Points for Cyber Attacks

Cybersecurity researchers are warning that attackers are actively targeting Fortinet FortiGate firewall devices as a way to break into corporate networks. In recent incidents, threat actors exploited vulnerabilities or weakly secured devices to gain access and extract sensitive configuration files directly from the firewall. These configuration files often contain valuable information such as network topology and service account credentials, which can give attackers insight into how an organization’s network is structured.
Once attackers obtain these configuration files, they may be able to retrieve encrypted service account credentials—such as LDAP credentials used for directory services—and leverage them to move deeper into the network. Security researchers observed attackers repeatedly checking compromised devices to maintain access, a behavior consistent with initial access brokers who break into networks and then sell that access to other cybercriminal groups. This type of activity can lead to further attacks including malware deployment, ransomware, or widespread data compromise across the organization.
Incidents like this demonstrate how critical network security infrastructure can quickly become an attack vector when vulnerabilities are discovered or devices are improperly secured. Firewalls are designed to protect organizations, but when exploited they can provide attackers with a powerful foothold inside a network.
